Piston Charger Engine (*PCE)

The piston charger is charging the main cylinder and simultaneously regulating the inlet and outlet aperture leading to no loss of air and fuel in the exhaust.

In the main cylinder combustion takes place every turn as in a two stroke engine and lubrication as in a four stroke engine. fuel injection can take place in the piston charger.
The combination of compact design for the combustion chamber together with no loss of air and fuel gives the engine more torque,more power and less fuel consumption. The benefit of less moving parts and clever technical design will lead to lower manufacturing costs. The engine is especially suited for use with alternative fuels since there is no corrossion or deposits left on valves.
It also fits in the hybrid technology because of its simplicity. The PCE is suited for a multi-fuel engine,stationary engine,thermal power station or range-extender

The piston charger engine is a six stroke engine.

The „six strokes“ of the engine:

1. aspiration 2. precompression 3. gastransfer
4. compression 5. ignition 6.ejection

Description of the New Engine Concept

The engine combines the specific advantages of both: the two cycle and the four cycle engines. Furthermore it eliminates many of the deficiencies of both types of engine.
It achieves this by means of the ingenious technology which is incorporated in the

Piston Charger Engine (PCE).

The complicated valve system in a four cycle engine is eliminated and a number of expensive moving parts is considerably reduced. This is achieved by means of provision of an cylinder (the Piston Charger Cylinder) which delivers the fuel-/air mixture to a working cylinder. The working cylinder drives the crankshaft by conventional means. The system works by means of an innovativ programmed interplay of the operation of the pistons; the opening and closing of ports and channels through which the fuel/air mixture and the exhaust gases pass and the timing of ignition. As a result, all parts relating to any valve operations are completely eliminated. Valve and tappet noise is no longer present, resulting in much quieter engine noise levels.
The engine operates in a two cycle configuration, but in contrast to the usual requirement for adding lubrication system which is used in modern four cycle engines. Because the PCE operates with twice the ignition frequency of a four cycle engine with the same number of combustion cylinders, the result is a much smoother operation. For example, a PCE with four combustion cylinders has the same smoothness of operation as one with approximately the same power output. The higher ignition frequency results in a greater thermal efficiency.
The PCE concept can be applied in both - Otto and Diesel engine principles. In the case of the Otto engine, the PCE technology offers many improvement possibilities for the creation of the fuel/air mixture some of which has not previously been possible.

The mixture can be created by:

  • Low pressure injection into the charge pump cylinder

  • Aspiration using a carburettor

  • Direct injection into the combustion chamber

  • Injection into the channels

The engine design and layout can also be very flexible. The PCE can be constructed with virtually no design limitations as:

  • Horizontally opposed (boxer) engine

  • An in-line engine

  • A v-engine

It is also possible to use one piston charger cylinder to fuel two working pistons. This permits a significant weight reduction and it may reduce engine compartment space.
Initial measurment of fuel consumption on the prototype have indicated a significant improvment in over all engine efficiency.

Helmut Kottmann was working 25 jears at Mahle GmbH in Stuttgart Bad Canstatt in the cylinder and piston construction. He constructed about 10 patents.
